Derek Jarman photographed at his home on Charing Cross Road, London, circa 1986.

Edward II (1991), by which time Jarman had become very ill (he died in 1994). But Jarman’s art—he was a contemporary of David Hockney’s at the Slade—was about more than politics or sexuality (although it had a lot to say on both fronts) and he had a resounding effect on how film is perceived as an art form today.

Terry Gilliam moved to the UK from his native America (he eventually renounced his American passport in 2003). An artist and animator, he started working with Monty Python, and after learning his filmmaking craft on the sets of the Python movies (Monty Python and the Holy Grail, 1975; Life of Brian, 1979), he set forth with his vastly imaginative, fantastical trilogy of Time Bandits (1981), Brazil (1985), and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1988). Equally unafraid and ambitious, he publicly took on an American major studio over its non-release of Brazil, and went to the wall for Munchausen, an expensive film that was also granted a very limited U.S. release.
